What Are Nasolabial Folds?

Nasolabial folds are the indentation lines on either side of the mouth that extend from the edge of the nose to the mouth's outer corners. They become more prominent when people smile. These folds also tend to deepen with age. While they are extremely common, their severity can vary. Everyone has nasolabial folds, some men/women would like theirs to be less prominent, there are lots of non-surgical treatments available at Melanie Jayne's Beauty Clinic.

How Are Nasolabial Folds Treated?

If you are concerned with your deepening nasolabial folds then book a consultation with Mel who will advise and find the right treatment for you.  Starting with a less-invasive procedure and maybe working your way up to something more significant or more invasive is usually recommended.

Fillers

Nasolabial folds can be treated using Dermal Filler to smooth the fold & reduce the shadow, giving an instantly smoother, fresher more youthful look. This treatment is very effective toward reducing nasolabial folds. The filler is injected into the skin around the cheek area, this adds volume to the area and lifts the skin. What type of filler and how much is used depends on the severity of the fold. The most common fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural building block of skin, and calcium hydroxylapatite, typically found in bones. Both have been shown to help stimulate the growth of collagen in addition to plumping the skin.

This treatment requires little to no recovery time. Some people experience slight bruising, if needed makeup can be worn immediately after treatment. They last 6 months to 2 years, with most lasting 6 to 9 months. How long a filler lasts depends on the type of filler and how quickly your body dissolves it.

Micro-Needling

If loose skin is the cause of unwanted nasolabial folds then a skin tightening treatment would be recommended, like micro-needling.  Your skin will appear to be visibly healed 24-48 hours following your treatment but the healing process is continuously happening beneath the surface for several months.  This natural healing process is what makes the treatment so effective.

After a few months, this new collagen will start to shorten. This leads to the slow tightening of the skin.  Over time this healing process will lead to the formation of a thick layer of collagen, healthy elastin and improved blood flow at the initial injury site.

Multi Polar Radio Frequency (RF)

Multi-polar RF applies focused energy to the area being treated (dermal layer). The RF energy excites the water molecules within the tissues, which generates heat that then breaks down old and damaged collagen, and triggers a shortening and instant tightening of healthy collagen fibres. It naturally speeds up and promotes growth of new healthy collagen.

The Multi-Polar RF at the same time stimulates blood flow and lymphatic drainage to remove toxins and further improve the appearance of the skin. The outcome is a restructuring of the skin, resulting in facial and body skin tightening.

Chemical Peels

FILLMED has 2 Superficial chemical peels targeting skin quality enhancement and suitable for ALL skin types. Formulated with gluconolacctone, which is a ‘new age’ chemical used in peeling as it does not strip the skin of moisture. Instead it helps to stimulate the renewal of the epidermis, the perfect solution to tired and stressed skin - restoring a glow and for improving complexion. Fillmed peels are superficial, so gently and safely peel the skin. It has been clinically proven that superficial peels and more frequent treatments are more effective than 1 deep aggressive peel that has risks of leaving clients with permanent skin damage and pigmentation marks.

What causes nasolabial folds?

Age, sun damage, and smoking are the biggest culprits of deepening nasolabial folds. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays break down the collagen and elastin fibers in your skin that keep it smooth and supported. Smoking also breaks down these fibers. As you age, cumulative skin damage can make your nasolabial folds more prominent.

Typical aging can also play a part, even without sun damage or smoking. As you age, the structure of your cheekbones flattens out. This can cause the skin of your cheeks to sag or droop downwards. Add to that years of gravity tugging on your skin and the natural decrease in collagen and elastin, and you have the perfect recipe for wrinkles, loose skin, and nasolabial folds.

Significant weight gain or loss can also contribute to nasolabial folds. Weight loss can lead to looser skin, especially in the face and neck. Weight gain can make the cheeks plumper and accentuate nasolabial folds.

Side sleeping may make one or both of your nasolabial folds deeper, but you don’t have to start sleeping on your back. You can certainly switch to sleeping on your back if deepening folds are a concern. However, a good night’s sleep is equally important for repairing your skin and staying healthy

Can nasolabial folds be prevented?

Using sun protection and not smoking are key to younger-looking skin and preventing deepening nasolabial folds, Melanie Jayne’s Beauty & Aesthetics’s Clinic recommends daily sunscreen usage. It’s important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays if you’re going to be outside or in the sun, even if you’re driving or behind a window.

Moisturizing skincare products can also help reduce the folds and improve the overall quality of your skin, products that contain antioxidants like vitamin C will help protect the collagen and elastin in your skin. Products with retinol can also help boost the production of skin cells and keep the skin looking more youthful. Just be sure always to wear sunscreen and moisturize when using retinols. They can dry out the skin and make it more susceptible to sun damage.
