WHAT IS LED PHOTOTHERAPY?

HOW DOES LED PHOTOTHERAPY WORK?
Phototherapy, meaning ‘Treatment with Light’ is based on the principle that all living cells have evolved to absorb and be influenced by light. Light is a powerful energy and when applied correctly, has a significant impact on how we look, feel and perform.
The mechanism of action is a natural response similar to that of photosynthesis through a process known as photobiomodulation.
The human body has an amazing capacity to heal itself and light plays a crucial role.
The treatment involves exposing the skin to specific wavelengths or nanometres (nm) from the visible (colour) and infrared (invisible) part of the light spectrum. Wavelength selection is crucial to the success of the LED treatment as it determines how effectively the light is absorbed. It is so much more than colour choice.
There are over 3,000 independent clinical studies supporting LED Phototherapy but only three wavelengths (nm) have been shown over time to deliver significant therapeutic outcomes; Blue 415nm, Red 633nm and Near Infrared 830nm.
The use of Green 520nm, Yellow 590nm and 600nm are not supported by credible scientific research to deliver any significant therapeutic benefit.

Whilst LEDs emit relatively low levels of energy, we know that not all light is absorbed by the required target due to the principles of reflection and scattering. Furthermore, delivering a lower energy dose over a longer time duration does not equate in results to a higher power treatment over a shorter exposure time.
To ensure optimum cell activation during the LED treatment, the delivered energy per second (joules), total absorbed energy by the treatment area (J/cm2) and the stability of photon energy emitted over the duration of the treatment are all key considerations.

The Flex MD device has a total of 360 LED bulbs (120 blue, 120 red, 120 near-infrared) which send wavelengths deep below the skin's surface.
Blue light (415nm) is absorbed into the skin’s first layer, triggering a natural reaction to destroy the acne-causing bacteria to reduce breakouts. Blue 415nm is clinically proven to significantly improve/clear mild to moderate acne by 76% after just 4 weeks (Morton, 2005).
One layer down, red light (633nm) is absorbed. Energising the skin to promote faster repair and renewal, it rejuvenates cells using targeted treatments for a host of concerns including fine lines and wrinkles, redness, pigmentation and psoriasis as well as muscular and joint pain.
Red 633nm and Near Infrared 830nm have been demonstrated to improve skin texture and smoothness by up to 79% (Neil S Sadick, 2008).

IS THE TREATMENT SAFE?
Yes. Dermalux has one of the highest safety profiles of any skin care treatment. It does not generate heat or UV wavelengths so cannot damage skin tissue or create photosensitivity. It is clinically proven to be safe for all skin types and the most sensitive skin conditions.
WHAT DOES THE DERMALUX TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
The number of treatments required for optimum results is subject to a number of factors including indication and severity, age and lifestyle. An initial course of 8 to 12 sessions (depending on the Dermalux device used) is generally recommended for all conditions. Treatments taken in quick succession will generally achieve faster results.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

CAN A SHEET MASK BE USED AT THE SAME TIME OF A TREATMENT?
No. We do not recommend using any mask on the skin with Dermalux as this will cause a barrier which will block some of the beneficial light. The mask can either be applied before or after the LED treatment.
DOES DERMALUX STIMULATE VITAMIN D PRODUCTION?
No.Vitamin D production is triggered by exposure to UVB light which converts cholesterol found naturally in the body to vitamin D3
WILL DERMALUX GIVE ME A TAN?
No. Demalux does not use any wavelengths in the UV spectrum. The Dermalux Flex MD LED’s have a very narrow nanometre tolerance to ensure they only emit the required peak wavelength.
WHY CAN'T I SEE THE NEAR INFRARED (NIR) LIGHT?
Light is a powerful energy which is made up of wavelengths ranging from very short gamma rays to very long radio waves. The human eye has evolved to detect wavelengths between 400nm and 700nm as colour. We see this as the rainbow ranging from blue through to red light. We do not see UV wavelengths which range up to 390nm and at the other end of the electromagnetic spectrum, we do not detect Near Infrared wavelengths at around 800nm plus. NIR is a very powerful wavelength even though we cannot see it.
IS NIR LIGHT BENEFICIAL ON ITS OWN?
Absolutely. As we don’t see NIR light, it is easy to underestimate the amazing therapeutic benefits. NIR is the wound healing wavelength. It accelerates repair and has powerful calming and soothing benefits for inflammatory and problem skin conditions. It is also proven for pain relief.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR THE DERMALUX TREATMENT?
No. Dermalux is safe for all ages however treatment of clients under the age of 18 will require parental consent.
CAN A CLIENT UNDERGOING TREATMENT FOR CANCER HAVE A DERMALUX TREATMENT?
We do not recommend using the Dermalux treatment on any client who is currently undergoing medical treatment for cancer. Once the client has been signed off by the oncologist or doctor, it is safe to proceed. Dermalux can be used on clients who have previously had cancer.
CAN I HAVE A DERMALUX TREATMENT IF I'M PREGNANT?
Even though the Dermalux treatment is very safe, our devices have not been tested on pregnant women therefore the risk is unknown. The clinic would need consent from a doctor before any treatment could commence. It is safe to use on clients who are breast feeding
